LOS ANGELES / WASHINGTON: There was no evidence of trauma or foul play in the death of Michael Jackson, officials said, but additional tests will be needed to find out how the musician died. “The cause of death has been deferred,” said Craig Harvey of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office in broadcast remarks Friday.

“The medical examiner has ordered additional testing such as toxicology and other studies. “Harvey said the tests would take four to six weeks to complete.

Jackson died suddenly Thursday of what his brother, Jermaine, said was cardiac arrest. He was unconscious and not breathing at the time of the emergency call to paramedics, and emergency room physicians and cardiologists worked to resuscitate him for more than an hour, Jermaine Jackson said Thursday.

Harvey said the coroner’s office knew Jackson had been taking prescription drugs, but wouldn’t comment on any specifics until the toxicology tests had been completed.

“Once tests are completed, we anticipate being able to close the case and issue a final cause of death,” Harvey said. Jackson’s death ended a life in the spotlight that shone not only on his talent but also on the darker side that involved reports that he was addicted to prescription drugs, and two celebrity cases involving allegations of paedophilia.

Reports of his addictions circulated widely after his death. Jackson died after being given “a heavy dose of morphine,” according to celebrity website tmz.com.

Family members were alarmed at his physical state and had planned to put him in a rehab facility for his addiction to morphine and prescription drugs, according to the website, which first reported his death. Brian Oxman, a former attorney for the Jacksons who was with the family in the hospital emergency room Thursday, said he had been concerned about the medications the pop star was taking.

“I talked to (the) family about it, I warned them. I said that Michael is overmedicating and that I did not want to see this kind of a case develop,” Oxman told CNN. The tests were “standard evaluations”, Harvey said.

Autopsies are a process of ruling out possible causes, and “we want to make sure the systems in the body were functioning properly”. Harvey said the autopsy took about three hours, which was not unusual. He also said that Jackson’s body would be ready for release Friday evening, as soon as the family selects a mortuary.

LONDON: An inconsistent Sania Mirza’s Wimbledon hopes ended with a second round exit at the hands of her friend Sorana Cristea 4-6, 4-6 at the All England Club here Wednesday. The Romanian teenager continued her cruise in women’s tennis as he dispatched Sania in an hour and 22 minutes to reach the third round.

Cristea had caused a flutter in the Grand Slam at French Open, knocking out former World No.1 Jelena Jankovic to seal a quarterfinal place. Sania’s run-up to Wimbledon had been impressive and held hopes of her moving beyond the second round in her fifth attempt here.

But once again she scripted her own downfall with an erratic play, losing her serve at crucial moments. Although her booming groundstrokes had Cristea in trouble, errors flew far too many from Sania’s racket to neutralise her powerplay.  In the fifth game of the first set, Sania saved four break points, but eventually a misfiring forehand gave Cristea an early break.

The Romanian consolidated the break with a love game to go 4-2 up. Sania had everything going her way at that stage with her forehand winners coming at will. “It was some sort of transmitter by all accounts. We’re not sure what the device picked up or whom it was transmitting to. But it did leave Paris very jittery. Everyone she has come into contact with during her stay in Dubai has been gracious. We’ve been told there are some quarters where there is anti-American feeling,” a source told Britain’s Daily Express newspaper.

“Paris’ security has been increased and hotel staff are investigating how the device came to be in her room,” added the source.

Actor Jiiva is trying two highly diverse roles in his first double action flick, ‘Singam puli’, even as comedian Kanja Karuppu, is working on a double presence in ‘Aaaru Manamey Aaru’.This seems to be the season of dual roles in Kollywood, with most of our leading actors, opting for films that feature them in two roles. While some have openly declared that they are playing a dual role, speculations are rife that a few film crews are keeping it a secret.

A few heroes, take Jiiva or Suriya for example, are taking care to make their roles look and feel different, while a few heroes are trying to pass muster with identical looks in both characters, example, Vijay, as dad and son in ‘Villu’.How much ever the effort be, this does seem like the season for actors to double their efforts for every film. MUMBAI: The key challenge facing India’s new ruling coalition is to maintain a strong growth rate, which has suffered in the face of the global financial crisis, the Reserve Bank of India’s deputy governor said on Monday.

“We have to observe that uncertainty in the world is still very high and we cannot ignore the fact that we are more integrated to the world than we used to be,” Rakesh Mohan told reporters. The Central Bank expects the economy to expand about 6 percent in the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, lower from the previous year’s estimate of 6.5-6.7 percent.

In the previous three fiscal years, Asia’s third largest economy grew at 9 percent or more. Mohan said while India’s economy would continue to do well, expectations have to be realistic as the country cannot decouple with the rest of the world.

Merchandise exports contribute less than 15 percent of India’s gross domestic product, reflecting the fact that the country is far less dependent on external demand for spurring growth than other Asian countries.

Still, the economy has been hit by the crisis much more than expected due to large services exports and increased integration of the financial sector, analysts say.

The government and the central bank have taken aggressive steps to revive the economy after the collapse of Lehman Brothers last year hurt sentiment across the world and depressed demand.

NEW DELHI: India, the world’s largest democracy, was set to count on Saturday millions of votes cast in Lok Sabha elections even as leading political parties continued to hunt for new allies to make up the numbers in a fractured parliament.

While both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) voiced confidence that they would be the single largest group in the 545-seat Lok Sabha, their strategists began contacting smaller and regional parties that are expected to play a key role in government formation.

Exit polls and projections at the end of staggered five-phase polling Wednesday showed that the Congress could get 145-160 seats in the hung Lok Sabha and be the single largest party, followed by the BJP’s range of 135-157. They said the UPA could bag 185-205 seats and NDA 165-208 seats.

With the Third Front tipped to score around 100 seats, a new government would become near impossible unless two formations gang up or key sections of one alliance decide to prop up another coalition.

The BJP immediately scrambled to assert that Nitish Kumar was still with the NDA while the Congress pointed out that it had given substantial funds to the eastern state.

With the NDA bagging the TRS and eyeing the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, the Congress opened secret channels with AIADMK-ally PMK and actor-politician Chiranjeevi in Andhra Pradesh besides Orissa’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which only months ago divorced the BJP after 11 long years.

Political sources said the hunt for numbers that lead to the majority mark of 272 would continue through the night. “This will accelerate once the results are known tomorrow,” a Congress leader said. “If one party or alliance crosses the 200-seat mark then that party or alliance will be in the driver’s seat.”

Officials meanwhile said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would resign on Sunday in line with constitutional provisions but remain in office until a new government is formed.
